Location

Firmly in the heart of Thamel, Kathmandu’s up-and-humming (generous) budget travel zone, the Dalai-La is well placed for shopping, sightseeing, eating and getting in tune with the city’s vibe. The airport’s about 20 minutes away by road.

Service & facilities

Space is at a premium in central Kathmandu but considerable space has been allotted to the pursuit of health, be it via the spa, fitness centre, or yoga and meditation room. An astrologer and a palmist are also on call, as is a mehendi (hand/arm henna painting) expert. The overall attitude is one of true professionalism; and there is no suggestion of any gimmickry. The hotel has a small stock of electric bikes.

Rooms

The 32 rooms are split between three wings – old, new and an extension – and divided into no less than seven categories. The duplex Everest Suite’s gaily coloured spiral staircase is a welcome stroke of wit; and its private balcony is roomy enough to host a small party.

Further down the roster, regular rooms are eminently comfortable, with plenty of wood and natural materials in evidence. TVs pick up international as well as local programmes. The bathrooms are especially smart: walk-in showers, brass basins with taps fashioned by hand in the shape of mythical beasts, and – in the larger rooms – clawfoot tubs. Solar power backs up the mains supply. No lift – but the staff think nothing of lugging suitcases up four flights.

Food & drink

It’s a set breakfast rather than buffet, but “set” allows guests to choose English, American, continental or browse around the à la carte menu. It’s served in the airy central courtyard, where guests are free to dally for much of the day; there’s covered seating around the sides. The Hub – continental but chiefly Italian – lives up to its fine dining claim. The bar is called 05.10.14, commemorating the day the hotel opened. It’s popular with Kathmandu residents, as well as those passing through.
