Indeed, Nepal is a mountaineer's paradise; Nepal houses a majority of the Eight-Thousanders including Mt. Everest (8,848m). More than one thousand peaks above 6,000m and innumerable 5,000m and 4,000m hills span east to west across the Nepal Himalaya. More than 300 peaks in Nepal are now opened for mountaineering expeditions. Thousands of climbers visit Nepal every year to conquer the soaring heights above 6,000m and inscribe their name in the glorious mountain history.
Peak climbing in Nepal is a great way to introduce oneself to the mountaineering world. From novice climbers to seasoned mountaineers, Nepal has a peak for all levels of climbers. Officially the NMA has categorized climbing peaks into TREKKING PEAKS and EXPEDITION PEAKS. Trekking peaks are moderately rated easy and require little or no technical climbing experience. Expedition peaks, on the other hand, require technical climbing skills and are considerably challenging.
Amazingly, the highest peaks of all seven continents are no higher than the average Nepali hill; for example, Australia's Mount Kosciuszko reaches 2,228m (7,310ft) and Antarctica's Mount Vinson rises to 4,897m (16,067ft). In Nepal, the world's tallest peak Mt. Everest-8,848m locally referred to as Sagarmatha and Chomolungma towers above the rest in the Khumbu or Everest region. Every year, this area receives the highest number of trekkers in Nepal. The Everest Base Camp trek is one of the most famous adventures around the world; it is listed among the top ten treks/hikes in the world by Lonely Planet, National Geographic, BBC Travel, and CNN Travel.
Admittedly, Nepal offers a plethora of opportunities for mountaineering and climbing. More than one dozen peaks are available to climb in the Nepal Himalaya. However, the peaks above 6,500m fall under the regulation of the Ministry of Tourism. Likewise, Nepal Mountaineering Association is responsible for mountains ranging from 5,800m to 6,584m. In this context, experienced climbers can scale 8,000m peaks and amateurs can choose peaks above 6,000m to plunge into the world of mountaineering.
Note: If you are a beginner/ novice climber then you can choose easy to moderate graded peaks. Two famous trekking peaks in Nepal and popular among novice climbers are Mera Peak and Island Peak. If you are experienced climbers, you can opt for moderate to difficult and difficult to challenging graded peaks. High mountains like Mount Everest, Lhotse, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu always attract the attention of most experienced climbers.
